i would say AVG, but ofcourse just the anti virus is not enough, you will also need a firewall and a spyware/adware remover.

Kaspersky is the best ever, but it doesn't come very cheap. I *can* offer a little rebate for Kaspersky internet security (not much tho, mail me), but it still is expensive.

Yes, it is fine to buy Kaspersky online. It is not really made for newbies, there will be a bit of a learning curve, but its protection is world-class.

AVG is the favorite of noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

Good protection does not come cheap and it does not come without at least a little aggrevation.

It works great. Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spy-bot and Webroot

Spy Sweeper are also compatable (For spy and adware.

Is it a problem if Unistal Kaspersky Antivirus license expired?

My license has expired. Only effect of that seems to be the message that the current anti-virus database was released 91 days ago and that a valid antivirus database is required for the application to work efficiently. I'm still able to perform scans and protection still seems to be enabled. So what's the problem if I don't renew my license? I just don't know what an antivirus database means and it doesn't tell the consequence of not having an older database.

I'm only bothered because my C: shows only 130 MB disk space no matter how many huge files delete permanently. A thought occured in my mind that may be after the license expiry the Antivirus software is not working correctly let alone efficiently.

The most dangerous threats out there are the newest ones. To be protected against them, you must renew your license to get the virus database that contains their signature, or if they infect your computer, you will not be in the slightest protected. Yes, you can still scan, and the realtime is still on, but it's pretty much useless. If you are not prepared to pay, then uninstall Kaspersky and go to http://www.free-av.com/ and download the free Avira AntiVir Classic.

Well, here's how it goes: My comp. has this annoying virus that spreads via Windows Live Messenger by fabricating a file transfer request and, upon accepting that request, you've contracted the virus. I don't know if it's dangerous or anything, but it's VERY annoying and my avast! 4 Home Edition FREE won't pick it up. My friend suggests PC Tools AntiVirus... I've heard good things about avast! and I don't wanna be so quick to uninstall it. It is possible that your antivirus program can be causing a problem with your limewire connection, simply because it might be running in the background and preventing the P2P application for accessing the limewire network. Probably the antivirus software, has a firewall implemented, i advise you to go to options and see if there is a firewall, if that's the case then add the limewire as an allowed product to use internet, in the firewall options. That's the problem i think, cause the antivirus cannot do anything, it only scans for viruses or malicious software..

AVG is a good anti-virus software but it is not great. However since AVG is free you have nothing to lose. I personally think Avast is a better choice for free anti-virus software.

I think you should try both of them and see which one you like the best. Just make sure to uninstall your current anti-virus program before installing another. You should never have 2 anti-virus programs installed at the same time.

It will take up more. Memory usage does vary greatly from vendor to vendor, but id say you'd be looking at up to double as a rough rule of thumb.

What you have is a EULA for up to 3 computers. You can use it for 3 years in one computer, but after 1 year you will no longer be eligible for updates or upgrades. If you have to reformat your hard drive, you will have to reinstall the software. When you re-register it, if you use the same email address it will pick up on that. If you use a different email address, more than likely it will be treated as a new install and will allow you one year of upgrades and updates. Hope this helps.

I have just upgraded my antivirus software (mcafee total plus), and when installing, it is telling me that i need to remove/uninstall 'ca etrust antivirus' otherwise i won't be able to have spam protection, anti virus or privacy. I believe the best package for Vista is the Trend Micro Pro suite or in the very least their combo antivirus/antispyware package. The pro suite adds the firewall. I am using it right now on a brand new Vista Home Premium notebook.

You can also look over Webroot suite with Spysweeper, Sophos antivirus (VB100 winner) and firewall. Webroot is a smacking $40 US. The firewall gets a little slammed..... look around for more reviews on it.

you have to buy another Disk , u cant use the same CD 2 install the OS in other comp. theres only one way to purchase new activation codes from Microsoft they'll only gave you activation codes for 4 computers.

u can install the OS to your other pc but it wont work after 30 days.. because you cant use the same activation code for both computers. contact Microsoft I suggest you to call them.

I think microsoft expect you to license (buy a copy) of their so called operating system for each each PC. Why not use linux, that way you will not need licenses (or anti virus)
Unless you have an OEM license agreement, you have to buy each time or the owner will run into registration problems and you don't need that kind of feedback. I highly recommend AVG free or Avast if for an individual. If they are for a business, look into the PC-cillin for good products scalable to the users needs and great support at a very reasonable price.

i would go with AVG just because it is free and does just as good of a job as the two you have - but if i had to choose between those two it would have to be mcafee because norton will slow down your computer more. If AVG is not enough (for most people that is more then enough) then you can also get zone alarm (free) which will basically just put another wall between you and the ouside world but with the added bonus of asking you everytime if it should launch a program.

I had Norton software removed from my computer as I could not receive forwards, emails, attachments, or anything to speak of that were safe and was able to receive before installing Norton. However, the age old problem with Norton's commercial offering is that it has a bloated, cartoonish interface and thus uses a lot of resources. I have a lot of free antivirus/antispyware programs on my system: Avira AntiVir, AVG free edition, Spyware Terminator, ThreatFire, and a-squared. Spyware Terminator has a handy optional feature that warns you when a website is potentially dangerous or when it tries to install spyware on your system. I think the program that has caught the most worms and such for me is a-squared. Avira's also caught a few, although some people might find the nag screens whenever the program automatically updates annoying.

It is very good, companies that send a lot of email don't want viruses in their system. Yahoo has a good one. I don't think you need any more. Don't open attachments from people that you don't know, and if you do open them, just look, make sure you aren't running a program.

Don't know if it's the same sort of thing, but i had big problems trying to get Norton off my pc's.

In the end i had to go to Nortons webiste, download a tool %26 use that. I felt abit annoyed that i had to go to Norton's site to do it, but once i had the uninstall tool, it took all Norton off no prob.

Look through Add/Remove for any other Mcafee programs. Try uninstalling them first. If that doesn't work, your installation may be corrupt. Usually that can be fixed by reinstalling the same program again, Reboot then try uninstalling again. if that doesn't work try removal tool from Mcafee.

I had simillar issue.. Only solution try Macfree or Norton antivirus.. They should be able to remove it.. Else you will need a clean installation of windows again.. This will be much safer on longer run

I cant install spyware software?

i have avg and mcafee virus software and no spyware software at the moment. when i realized that i had a virus/spyware that my virus protection cant get rid of, i tried to install spybot S%26D 1.5.2 but in the middle of the installation it stopped saying "movefile failed; code 5. access is denied" so i re-downloaded the install file from a different source thinking the file was corrupt but the same thing occurred. i also tried to install lavasoft ad-aware and windows defender and the same thing occurred, something stopped the instalation. iv ran my antivirus software multiple time and download the free scan from norton and nothing came up. i tryed making a new user acount and setting it to admin and installing it from there, and it didnt work. let me know if you need any more info, im not THAT good with comps. but i can get around

I don't know much about either, but I do know McAfee really messed up our computer. My dad hates it, and he loves computer stuff, so I asume he knows what he's talking about. He does like Norton.
norton is not only an anti virus..you can have norton ghost, disk doctor etc..compare to mcafee which is only a anti virus..
They are both generally the same program, except for the way Norton AntiVirus is much easier to update.
Mcafee is much better than norton antivirus.Mcafee does not gets currpt and on the other hand norton gets currpetd most of times but norton updates are much easier.

I was wonderng...how can I setup a program to run off a cd rather then a hard drive? I have a friend who has his antivirus software installed and running from a cd rathe then his hard drive. He just pops in the cd then clicks on spysweeper then it installs in a temp location and runs off the cd. Never has to leave the software on on harddrive at all. It's very nice way of doing things? You didn't say what system you are running, but if u go to control panel and click add or remove programs you can go down the list and it will tell you all the programs you have installed. It should have norton or mcAfee in the list. There is also a possibility that the program has expired if you are not getting updates when you go on the internet. If that is the problem you can download one with a trial off the internet, and I suggest purchasing McAfee suite 2006 it is the best updated for viruses.

Also check if any other antivirus problem is installed. uninstall it before installing bitdefender. Also check if bitdefender is xp or vista based or can be used on both.
maybe your computer is old or your running an old Windows. or maybe it apple software (vice versa) ibm/apple dont go together.
BitDefender is part of the Vista OS, if you're using Vista, chances are it's conflicting with the pre-installed version.

You could always try a program such as NIS2008, which I feel does a better job, (though it is resource hungry, it does do it's job well), which would not interfere with BitDefender.
I am not exactly sure what your specific problem is , but please ignore the BS from Scott Bull above^. Bit Defender does NOT come pre-installed with Vista. What comes pre-installed with Vista is an anti-spyware called Windows Defender. Windows Defender will have no effect on your ability to install your Bit Defender anti-virus.

Some of the most recommended programs on here always seem to be AVG or Avast - although this is likely to be because they are free? Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.

The same goes for Spybot and Adaware. In fact if you had AVG, Spybot and Adaware installed, you would surprisingly only be protected from circa 60% of all known malware (viruses, adware, spyware, trojans, etc).

Norton and McAfee are the "best known" security products, which are currently protecting against something like 98.3% and 97% of all known viruses - a much better score. However, both of these are known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.

If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating.

George is right, when updates are downloaded it can change some files. AVG is reporting it as a change, not an infection or virus. Be careful and don't go changing or eliminating these files because if you do, you will really find yourself with troubles. Do a complete deep scan with a free program like spyware terminator, it will check for infected files and virus. You can find it on trusted sites such as majorgeeks.com.

This is some times the case with embedded files. But it is no problem to remove them your self. For example: AVG can clean up a virus and then show one or more items that are embedded. It tells you were they are. Use explorer to go there and just delete them. Example: usually will be a java script file so go to Windows/.jpi_cache/jar/1.0 and remove (delete) any files you find there.

Buy a full release retail version. These usually have a decent installer which includes a loader that will allow a dual boot system.

I used mandrake and it had this and so my desktop has both Windows and Linux. The full release versions (checkout companies info for the release for what's incl'd) have lots of extras included.

Mine had xwindows (GUI like windows), a full office package (word pro, spreadsheet, database, plus), games, mail server and lots more. Further once you setup the internet access in Linux you can download lots of programs for free or low cost.

Linux will utilize all the RAM in the system and is quite fast. Since it utilizes less ram than windows does it leaves more for programs. If the system has dual core or dual processors many versions of linux will utilize them automatically.

I ran linux on an old 350Mhz system and ran as fast as the 733Mhz we had.

As for which version, look around. Have fun.

I highly recommend you download SUPERantispyware. It will fix that problem. It is VERY VERY effective and it is free.
I would recommend you using another program, because I bet yours are not the best because all security programs are supposed to find all the pests whatever it takes.

If you are getting messages to install a adware program, don't accept it or do it, it might be a virus that is fake and it's trying to install something else.

Make sure to have a Firewall installed soon and some of these programs below. NEVER, accept anything else that you don't know what it is.

It's almost garunteed that you'll get a virus or some form of malware if you run your computer without protection. If you're looking for 'ligher' alternatives, try Avast Antivirus, or AVG. Windows default firewall is pretty good, so you can just use that. As for adware and spyware, try Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. All of these are free, and a lot quicker than Norton, though they may not be as good. Personally, I use Norton on one computer and Avast on the other.
