Virus software prompts?

Messages would come up from the system tray and in windows saying that my computer has viruses and when you continue it asks to buy antivirus software. My Norton has not picked anything up Is there a utility that would clean the system

What you are referring to is a SmitFraud Infection. It probably is telling you to buy something like "VirusBurst" or "WinHound" or "Win AntiVirus Pro". There are many out there like this that do the same thing. Infect the users computer and nag them to buy their software. Here is a link on how to remove the infection.

Yes there is, but I'm sure Mr Norton wouldn't tell you . . . . . . I will tho :)
I am amazed no one has suggested you download Lavasoft Ad-Aware, I am pretty sure this will get rid of your problem, and its free!!
It's not a virus, which is why your a/v software hasn't picked it up.

It's malware, designed to scare you into buying their product.

You can download all of these for free, any or all of them will deal with that pest and any others:

Adaware SE Personal

Spybot S%26D

Advanced WindowsCare V2 personal
Sounds like the warnings you are getting are from "malware" - software designed to scare you and make you cough up money for something you do not need.

If Norton cannot detect anything then your system is pretty safe, except for the software giving you the dire warnings.

Try Advanced WindowsCare V2 personal (free) to inspect your system

http://www.iobit.com/
try avg it's free and very effective
I strongly suspect this is an advertising trojan lieing to you.

Get an anti-spyware program as soon as possible, SpyBot Search and Destroy is possibly the best, get it from download.com
