to back up with my avira antivirus software.
it can't be BIT DEFENDER either, already tried that and windows vista said it was incompatible. every other one i tried has real time protection which could conflict with avira, i know i could always disable it as a start up program but would rather find one that didn't on its own.

Do not use two anti-virus programs with realtime protection at the same time. They will conflict and make your computer less secure. Avira is the best you can get for free, IMHO. To scan, try http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner/ (online scan)
However, make sure you have anti-spyware protection (as many as you like), such as http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Oh yeah, you can download ClamAV integrated into spyware terminator, then turn off realtime protection. That will still allow you to scan for both spyware and viruses on demand though.

I like using a combination of Lavasoft's Ad Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/), Spybot Search and destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index... and Hijack this (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/progr... for preventing browser hijacks and monitoring the state of your web browser(s).
