Well, I want to convicne my parents to try Linux. I'm leaning towords Ubuntu and Fedora. I first want to learn more about it and the benefits and differences from Winows Xp Professional. Also, to be wrothwhile it would need to have word processing, internet access, and some basic games for free. Also probably some antivirus software.

Buy a full release retail version. These usually have a decent installer which includes a loader that will allow a dual boot system.
I used mandrake and it had this and so my desktop has both Windows and Linux. The full release versions (checkout companies info for the release for what's incl'd) have lots of extras included.
Mine had xwindows (GUI like windows), a full office package (word pro, spreadsheet, database, plus), games, mail server and lots more. Further once you setup the internet access in Linux you can download lots of programs for free or low cost.
Linux will utilize all the RAM in the system and is quite fast. Since it utilizes less ram than windows does it leaves more for programs. If the system has dual core or dual processors many versions of linux will utilize them automatically.
I ran linux on an old 350Mhz system and ran as fast as the 733Mhz we had.
As for which version, look around. Have fun.
