Is it good to have multiple antivirus softwares and spyware removers on my computer?

More than one anti-virus sets up conflicts of one against the other. This reduces security, as neither is able to scan correctly. Manual spyware removers cause no problems, as long as you only scan with one at a time, but again automatic ones will conflict.

in the past i would have parroted the previous answers that 1 good one is enough but i've changed my mind now.

virus writers used to write their nasties and rely on users laziness with virus scanners and updates to infect x number of machines.

virus (and other malware) writers seem to be taking the offensive even more and the better writers are directly targeting the big name AV companies. for example, virus x will scan your machine to ascertain if you're using Norton ( or McAfee or ...) and disable it before it even runs its payload.

the advantage to running dual scanners is to defeat this. the virus would be too bulky to check for all AV programs so its chances of survival are slimmer.

what i do now is run a major AV program (Symantec corporate) and also a lessor known AV concurrently ( AVG, Kaspersky).

yes, you do have to juggle a bit to ensure they play nice together and fight malware and not each other but the plus is another layer of protection.

The use of 2 or more anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a major computer slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

(Using an anti-spyware (even multiple anti-spywares) with an anti-virus is good, however and is recommended)

You might consider choosing just one A-V and removing any others.
