Adaware. Adaware. Adaware. It is the ONLY thing I trust with my computer and I did tech support for years helping people with viruses. Do a google search and use it. It is made by Lavasoft. I have been using it forever. I promise it works, even the free version.

Over the years I've recommended all kinds of products. They started out great and gradually went downhill. Currently I have the best results with Kaspersky Antivirus. Antivirus only, the security suites (and this is across the board really) are usually a rip-off if the AV does it's job properly. I would avoid McAfee and Norton like the plague. Not only do they really not do a very good job, they also are extremely heavy and will drastically slow your system down.
anti-spyware software is also unnecessary if you have a good AV product and don't use Internet Exploder for your general browsing needs. That includes third party browsers that use IE for their base such as AOL and SBC's browser from a few years back. Those customers that I have switched over to using Firefox and Kaspersky, well, I have not had to see them again for malware problems.
