What software:
Recovery Tools
Antivirus
Firewall
zip utilities

etc...?
What software would you put in PC Emergency Kit?free spyware
First of all, depending upon what problems were afoot (i.e. is the hard drive failing?), I would definitely have the following:
a) a bootable disk image (Norton's Ghost for a baseline), a bootable CD with the same OS and a folder with a complete set (even if not necessarily up to date) of all the drivers for the machine and a recovery (or at least bootable floppy).
b) A text file saved somewhere which contains your software keys for any downloaded or installed software, as well as information to get you back on the network, such as your WEP key if you have wireless or any IP addresses you need to manually configure;
c) A folder (which I usually contain on my main drive partition) with useful command prompt utilities (usually InfoZIP for compression, and Borland's GREP nowadays);
d) A disk with all the freeware utilities; and if you can afford it, the commercial system recovery tools from SysInternals.
I've provided a link to (d) below.
